3 of 4 Fla. interstate highways voted most dangerous

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Ever traveled between Tampa and Orlando and wondered if you were on the most dangerous road in America?

Well, you’re right, according to a study conducted by EverQuote, an auto insurance marketplace.

I-4, which only runs in Central Florida, is one of three Florida interstates to make the list. I-10, which runs from Florida to California, and I-95, which runs from Florida to Maine, were also listed due to its heavy traffic areas, which increases the probability for accidents, the report said.

Government organizations are attempting to limit these incidents and increase safe driving habits. Also, some auto insurance companies are developing technologies to study current driving practices and implement positive changes, the study said.

Distracted driving is a leading cause of traffic accidents nationwide, the study reported.

“The epidemic of distracted driving is thought to be responsible for about 9 percent of all road fatalities,” the study said.

When combining congested roads with distracted driving, it can be a recipe for disaster.

“Floridians [pick up their devices] 1.4 times per trip,” which is much higher than the “national average of 1.1 times,” the study reported.
